Porto: Vacation in the enchanting, baroque port city of Portugal

Porto is majestic and it is considered one of the most impressive cities in Europe. This beautiful place enchants not only with its flourishing life, but also with its rich architectural heritage and the unique architectural style of the houses. Porto gave the country its name, but also the aromatic port wine, which was first produced here in the 18th century.
The first Portuguese tram ran here in the 19th century and is still one of the most popular symbols of the country.
The city's moderately warm climate also creates pleasant conditions for your visit at any time of the year.

1. Highlight: Guided city tour through Porto
Today we have enough time to get an impression of the beautiful city. We go on a historical city tour that has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Among other things, we will visit the world-famous "Igreja São Francisco" church, which was decorated with numerous golden wood carvings. Right next door is the Stock Exchange Palace with its wonderful granite work.
We continue to the bright blue river "Douro" in the center, where we can admire another famous landmark of the city - the Ponte Dom Luís I. This fascinating half-timbered arch bridge was the largest of its kind when it was built. Today it connects Porto with the city of Nova de Gaia.
We visit one of the many tabernas, where we can try the delicious local wine and finally, in the afternoon we go to the library "Livraria Lello", which served as a template for the famous Harry Potter books and films.

Highlight: Excursion to Braga - full day
Braga is considered the third largest city in Portugal and is particularly known for its narrow streets and charming stone houses. Here you will find wonderful, historical places and magnificent baroque churches. On the outskirts of the city there is an imposing Roman Catholic church called "Bom Jesus do Monte" ("Good Jesus from the mountains"). With its impressive baroque staircase, it is one of the most beautiful pilgrimage churches in Portugal. It is located on the slope of a hill and is surrounded by a large park with a lot of forest and lush flower meadows. The upper viewing platform allows a breathtaking view of the pretty town, the valley and the surrounding hills.
Braga is considered a very young place and was even declared the "Youth Capital of Europe" in 2012. Its old town is full of stylish boutiques, lively cafés, quaint restaurants and bars.

Return and overnight in Porto

Highlight: Excursion to Aveiro - full day
We spend the 4th day of our city trip in the small, enchanting city of Aveiro, which lies on the shores of the Atlantic. It is known for its numerous water canals on which the bright Portuguese boats "Moliceiro" sail and which are strongly reminiscent of the colorful Venetian gondolas.
All the buildings along the canals are two or three stories high, wrapped in bright colors and decorated with Portuguese mosaic. This creates a unique, distinctive and cheerful color palette that enchants all guests of the city. The promenade "Cais dos Botiroes" is the most picturesque place.
Then we visit the Dominican monastery museum "Mosteiro de Jesus" from the 15th century and the "Museu de Aveiro" with its sculptures and ceramics from the Baroque period, ethnographic exhibits and its important collection of paintings.
At the end of the tour we walk along the charming houses in the fishing village of Costa Nova with its endless beaches and the fresh breeze of the Atlantic before we set off again for Porto.
