1st highlight: Piazza Navona
On the first day of travel we will dedicate ourselves to the most important historical sights of Rome. Our tour begins at Piazza Navona, a historical site of the Romans, where fairs, festivals and tournaments took place in ancient times. Here is the work of the great architect Bernini "The Fountain of the Four Rivers", as well as basilicas, Egyptian obelisks and lush houses in the Baroque style. The Basilica of Sant'Agnese in Agone has a special history. This is where the skull of the holy martyr Agnes is kept, who, according to legend, was killed in 304 AD.

2nd highlight: Pantheon
Then we walk along the ancient streets of Rome to the Temple of All Gods - the Pantheon. This monument originates from the heyday of architecture in ancient Rome and was completed between 125-128 AD. The Pantheon's dome is still the largest surviving concrete dome ever built.

3rd highlight: Trevi Fountain
Now we visit another highlight of the city, the Trevi Fountain, with a statue of the sea god Oceanus. We'll take a short break here to listen to the story of the fountain. Of course, you can also toss a coin in to enhance your personal happiness.

4th highlight: Piazza Venezia
Next we come to Piazza Venezia with the magnificent Vitariano Palace, which is a symbol of the unification of Italy. Here we can enjoy the magnificent panorama of the city from the viewing platform.

5th highlight: excursion to the Palatine Hill
After lunch, we will visit the oldest inhabited part of the city, the Palatine Hill. Already in the 10th century BC, there were settlements here that, according to legend, were the basis for the later founding of the city of Rome. In addition to the excavations of ancient palace structures and temples, we find various old fountains, ponds and several pavilions. Additionally, you can see a richly decorated grotto, as well as great rose gardens with orange trees and numerous pine trees.

In the evening you can explore the city on your own and take a stroll along the Christmas markets in the center.

1st highlight: city tour through Rome
We start the day with a visit to the most visited monument in Italy - the Colosseum. Its extraordinary architecture, the fame and the spectacle of gladiatorial fights establish its popularity gained over the centuries and made it a distinctive symbol of the city of Rome. It was built in the 1st century AD by order of the emperors of the Flavian dynasty. Various animal fights and gladiator games were shown here until the end of antiquity. Today the Colosseum is a monument to the high-quality architecture of the Romans in antiquity. The size of the interiors, underground levels and a breathtaking view of the city make the visit a "must-see".

2nd highlight: Caracalla thermal baths
In the immediate vicinity of the Colosseum are the ancient baths of Rome - the Baths of Caracalla. The construction of the largest thermal baths in the city began in 206 under the Roman emperor Septimius Severus. Even ancient authors described the complex as excellent and gigantic (Latin eximias et magnificentissimas), as it is also rich in marble, mosaics and statues. For several centuries, this majestic and luxurious building served not only as a public bath, but also as a place of sports and intellectual freedom. You can still feel the atmosphere of the centuries through the imposing walls, vaults and columns of this complex.

1st Highlight: Excursion to the Vatican City
The Vatican is the smallest state there is. With its spiritual dimension it forms the center of the Christian world. The center of the Roman Catholic Church is the pilgrimage site for believers of different religions from all over the world. Within the walls is the world-famous Sistine Chapel with its vaulted frescoes, basilicas and churches created by Michelangelo. During our visit we will also look at the diverse art treasures that have been collected in the Vatican museums. The entire territory of this powerful papal state is recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It takes about 3 h to explore the Vatican City.

2nd highlight: the end of the year with a festive dinner and the Fest di Roma
At the end of this eventful day, a festive dinner with a multi-course New Year's Eve menu is planned in a local restaurant. In Rome, New Year's Eve is primarily a street festival. Many locals eat at home or in a trattoria that day and then flock to the city center late at night to party and enjoy the fireworks. Concerts are held around the clock that night. One of the main events of this evening is the so-called Festa di Roma, an impressive show with performances by world stars. Here you can enjoy the music and dance until 3 a.m. Since you have a hotel in a central location, you can always return there.

Option: Naples
After lunch we drive to the picturesque and bustling port city on the Gulf of Naples. This southern Italian metropolis impresses with its fabulous location by the sea above Vesuvius, framed by the Sorrento peninsula. Among other things, Naples is known worldwide for its historical center with narrow, winding streets, basilicas and catacombs, which are all considered UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
In the evening we check into a centrally located hotel and visit a local restaurant to try traditional Neapolitan dishes.

Highlight: City tour of Naples - full day
On the 6th day an eventful tour through the diverse Naples is planned. The city is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the world. First we start our journey in the ancient Neápolis and follow the history of the development of the city up to the present day. We explore the largest Christian catacombs complex of San Gennaro from the 3rd - 4th centuries AD, also known as the Valley of the Dead. Here we see the breathtaking frescoes and Byzantine paintings from various historical epochs below the street. Afterwards we walk through the old town, which consists of a maze of narrow and charming streets. It seems like life near the regularly active volcano is full of energy. We take a look at the Baroque church Cappella Sansevero and Gesù Nuovo from the 16th century and then visit the Archaeological Museum. This shows findings from the 2 large excavations in Herculaneum and Pompeii. Our way continues through the main square of the city, the Piazza del Plebiscito, which is surrounded by magnificent palaces and the basilica, to the promenade on the Gulf of Naples. The oldest preserved fortification in the city is located here, the Castel dell'Ovo, with a fascinating panoramic view of Mount Vesuvius. At the end of the day we let our experiences fade away in a cozy trattoria and try a wide variety of delicacies from the Neapolitan cuisine.

1st highlight: excursion to Vesuvius
A visit to Vesuvius is really impressive as it is the only active volcano on mainland Europe. We cover most of the way up in a minibus. Then we walk the last part along a path to the crater and enjoy the breathtaking view of the sea. On the way we see solidified lava, which are traces of the last volcanic eruption in 1944. Once at the top, we hike along the rim of the crater and hear exciting stories about the strongest eruption of the volcano in 79, which buried the ancient Roman cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Oplontis.

2nd highlight: visit the ghost town of Pompeii
On the other side of Vesuvius is the world-famous archaeological excavation site of the city of Pompeii, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the 4th century BC Ancient Pompeii was founded, it was once a prosperous city with a population of 20,000. However, the force of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 was so strong that the city was buried under a meter-thick layer of ash within a few hours. During the excavations, fully furnished houses and mummified remains of people and animals that were unable to escape were discovered. Today Pompeii is a breathtaking museum city with central streets, a square, theaters, basilicas and even bathing facilities. With our guide we stroll through the city, hear exciting facts and legends and look at the murals on the buildings.
